PFAS “Forever” Chemicals? Not in Your Mouth.

PFAS “Forever” Chemicals? Not in Your Mouth.

PFAS — aka “forever chemicals” — have been used in everything from raincoats to cookware to (yep) oral care. They’re water-resistant, oil-resistant, and basically impossible to break down — which means they build up in your body and the planet.

At COCOLAB, we believe clean should actually mean clean. That’s why everything we make — from our Cocofloss (a PFAS free dental floss) to our Cocobrush handles to Cocoshine tubes — is made without intentionally added PFAS. If you're looking for dental floss without PFAS, you're in the right place.

Wait, What Are PFAS?

PFAS (short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals designed to resist water, oil, and heat. Sounds useful — until you realize they don’t break down easily and can stick around in your body and the environment for, well, basically forever. There are over 12,000 of them, and they’re showing up everywhere — air, water, food, and yes, even your floss. That’s why it matters to choose dental floss free of PFAS.

Why Are PFAS a Problem?

The nickname “forever chemicals” isn’t just dramatic — it’s science. PFAS can accumulate over time in the body and have been linked to health concerns including hormone disruption, immune issues, and more. We’re not saying every PFAS will make you sick, but a lot of the data isn’t looking so good — which is why the EPA is cracking down.

Most research points to drinking water and industrial sites as major exposure sources, but small household items like floss with PFAS still contribute to the overall load. At COCOLAB, we don’t take chances. We avoid anything even remotely sketchy — especially when it comes to your mouth.

Where Do PFAS Show Up in Oral Care?

Some traditional flosses use PFAS-based coatings to make them slide easier — typically PTFE, a fluorinated compound also known by the brand name Teflon®. That’s why if you're using standard floss, there's a good chance it's not PFAS free. Toothbrushes and packaging can also contain hidden PFAS compounds.

Many brands won’t tell you what they’re using — but we do. We design our PFAS free floss to be clean, traceable, and tested.

Our Materials: Conscious, Clean, and PFAS Free

We use post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic — from discarded PET water bottles — to produce the fibers in our Cocofloss and the handles of our Cocobrush. This reduces virgin plastic, diverts waste from oceans and landfills, and lowers our carbon footprint.

High-heat recycling can sometimes introduce PFAS, but we work only with vetted suppliers and labs that screen both raw and finished materials for PFAS — making sure our dental floss is PFAS free from start to finish. Our commitment to testing and transparency is part of how we ensure you’re using floss without PFAS, every time.

Our Promise: No Added PFAS. Full Stop.

Since 2024, we’ve used TÜV Rheinland®, a third-party ISO-accredited lab, to test our Cocofloss and confirm it’s free of intentionally added PFAS. Their testing covers a wide range of known PFAS compounds and aligns with global safety standards.

You may see brands say “no intentionally added PFAS.” Here’s why: PFAS can sometimes show up unintentionally due to how common they are in the environment. But we take that seriously, too. That’s why our entire supply chain is designed to minimize that risk — because when we say PFAS free floss, we mean it.

So… What Are You Using Instead?

We don’t believe in trade-offs. Our dental floss without PFAS is made with coconut oil and natural waxes — not PTFE or any other fluorinated materials. The result? A floss that’s PFAS free, safe, and still glides like a dream.

As for everything else — from packaging to bristles — we use FSC® certified paper, tree-free sugarcane fiber, and recyclable plastics. Sustainability meets serious performance.

This Is Conscious Innovation

We’re not perfect — but we’re committed to doing better. Saying no to PFAS is just one part of our bigger mission to make oral care healthier for people and the planet. Whether you’re looking for a floss without PFAS, a dental floss PFAS free certification, or a company that’s as transparent as it is effective — we’re here for it.

Clean should actually mean clean.
